Back from St P. I'll post something about it when I get a chance. But cfr, yes, I was looking for inspiration, and indeed researching the novel I'm currently working on, which I have insanely set in St Petersburg.
I didn't get mugged, disgruntled. Were you?

Not mugged exactly - details here - but an unpleasant enough experience that I probably wouldn't have had the courage to make friends with a randomly helpful Russian the way you did. In fact you seem to have had better luck all round in St. P than I did. Probably because you're a nicer person...
That does sound unpleasant. I was lucky. I did think about taking my laptop, but decided just to take a notebook (of the paper variety) and a few pens. I was worried about my camera all the time. Andrey warned me to be alert. But I was fortunate, I realise that.
