Today, I failed.

The last couple of days I've been getting up at 5.30 a.m. - well, actually a little earlier - to try to progress my current W.I.P.. This morning, I didn't manage it. Just too bloody knackered. Hardly surprising really, as I have also not been getting to bed until past midnight most nights. Not so much working on the new one, as frittering away time blogging and myspacing and talking to myself.

I must be getting old. I wrote this book by getting up ridiculously early, in an intense burst of energy one summer not so long ago. But I just don't seem to be able to do it any more.

I just wish there were more hours in the day.

I sympathise Roger. The only way I can do it is if my partner is on an early flight and makes a lot of noise when he get's up. But these days I seem to have the ability to sleep through anything.

It's great when you can do it though - you can leave for work with a feeling of smug satisfaction that you've already written a few hundred words.

Same thing happened to me this morning, Roger. I was meant to get up at 5:50 for the gym, which I do Mon, Wed and Fri - but not this Friday! A bit burned out, I guess. Well, it's been two weeks since my last holiday, after all :-)

I can empathise too, Rog. I think that I've accepted now that being tired most of the time is part and parcel of being a writer. It could be worse; something you didn't love could be wearing you out. Chin up.

Thanks Tara, Debra, Ian, Nik, Julie... Seems like I struck a chord here! The other problem is that the day job is being particularly demanding at the moment. Grrr. I

Morning? As in 'get up in the ...'?

Sorry - does not compute ... But I'm filled with admiration for anyone who understands the words 'getting up at 5.30.'

I could try it but suspect our home would be littered with the twitching corpses of my loved ones by 5.35 ...

So you're not a morning person, Debi? I am beginning to realise that I'm not either. I did manage 5.30 on Sunday though. Which is pretty mad. Jeepers. I can't believe I got up at 5.30 on a Sunday.

How did you guess? Nah - I can lie on my settee and write 'til early hours but ... mornings ... duh!
