Everyone's talking about....

... movie trailers for books. But really it should be book trailers for books, shouldn't it? In other words, an extract from the book, which is what you have here. Or simply the blurb, which you can find here.

I have to confess, though, I am fascinated by the idea of trailer-style ad for Taking Comfort and have even cobbled together something using the basic microsoft movie software that came with my Dell computer. I can't show it to you because (a) it's very rough and (b) I use lots of copyright imagery that would cost me (or Macmillan!) a fortune - well, a couple of hundred quid - to buy. Oh, and I haven't got permission for the music track I laid over it either.

It was fun to do because it kept me from doing what I really needed to be doing, i.e. getting on with the current book. But even if the basic idea is a good one, which I am not wholly convinced about, to get it done properly will cost real money.

I can't help thinking though: just because you can do something doesn't mean you necessarily should do it.

We'll see.

Private use can sometimes help these mere examples of how to make trailers.

The one I did for Christina was something like that - although the music is our own.

James Patterson used to have a commercial for Roses Are Red that they'd play in the morning here in the states. I'll never get that droning monotone out of my head,
"Roses Are Red.
Detective Alex Cross misled.
I'm James Patterson.
Read Roses Are Red."
Not that I'm into that kind of book anyway, but it made me absolutely never want to read an Alex Cross book! I'm sure your "trailer" will be much better--it would have to be!

Hi rashbre, I checked out Christina's video and couldn't view it on my PC for some reason. The track sounded great though. I would really like to see it now! Am very intrigued. Can you email it me as an attachment?

Carli, thanks for looking in. I don't think you have to worry about any trailer I do getting that much exposure! And you see, this is where I wonder if such things don't end up being counter-productive. We don't, after all, buy our books like we buy our beans.

Added: but if you get it right, ie come up with something original and entertaining in its own right, then maybe, just maybe, it will work????

Ah, nice thought Tom, but I fear even something as simple as that would be beyond my means.
